Pug Mill
This versatile pug mill continuously mixes all
types of products including dry, free-flowing powders, thin slurries,
and thick pastes. The compact design of this pug mill allows installation
in low headroom areas. Mixing intensity, retention time, and product
appearance,
can be controlled simply by changing agitator speed or paddle switch.

The Standard-Duty pug mill is more compact and economical,
and is ideal for mixing products that are not especially corrosive
or abrasive. Typical uses for the Standard-Duty pug mill include
molasses/fat addition to animal feeds, and water addition to meals
and filter
dusts.
Many
Standard-Duty
pug mills have been in operation for more than 30 years.
The Severe-Duty pug mill is designed for corrosive/abrasive
applications frequently requiring stainless steel construction,
special finishes or the need to isolate the main bearings from
the product zone. Typical uses for the Severe-Duty pug mill are
sewage sludge and lime/wood chips, corn gluten and steepwater,
filter
cake and
dried
recycled
fiber, explosive slurries, and human foods.
Double Agitator Mixers from Andritz Sprout
deliver outstanding performance in slurry applications, such as mixing grain water and recycle in ethanol production, and dryer conditioning applications: mixing wet cake, syrup, and dryer recycle for corn gluten feed and DDGS (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles), as well as similar products. In dryer conditioning applications, DA Mixers produce a flowable dryer feedstock having a minimum of wet or unwetted lumps that can adversely affect dryer performance.

DA Mixers are also in use in a myriad of industrial and food processing applications.
- Proven in severe duty applications worldwide
- Unique agitator design mixes quickly and thoroughly, enhancing fermentation and other processes
- Adjustable speed, retention time, and mixing intensity
- Machine design puts less stress on shafts, for longer life
- Compact design – can be installed in low headroom situations
Unique Agitator Design Dual agitator shafts have adjustable paddles mounted on a helix, assuring that product being blended is always being moved toward the discharge, regardless of paddle adjustment. Fifty percent paddle overlap assures intensive cross mixing action. Under these conditions, paddle adjustment affects bed depth and retention time. With a dual shaft configuration, product bed level can be maintained all the way to the discharge – not fall off as product seeks its own angle of repose, as is typical in single shaft and non- intermeshing designs.
Compact Integral Drive Standard Motor mounted directly above the reducer keeps the footprint compact. Motor and drive can also be mounted in different configurations, especially for high horsepower applications. Drive and reducer can be mounted on either end. The drive can be shipped as a unit, completely assembled with belt drive installed. This ensures accurate measurements and fitting, and saves time in installation. Simple V-belt primary drive permits easy speed adjustments to control mixing action and retention time. A simple gearbox, integral to the drive train, converts a single input to dual output. This indexes the shafts so turning is identical, assuring consistent mixing action. Dual-output oil-bath gearbox can be completely removed without disturbing the mixer shafts, enabling easy periodic maintenance. The gearbox has lip-type oil seals, vented oil filler, and visual oil level indicator.
Couplings and Bearings Rigid couplings support the shafts and transfer axial and radial loads to the gearbox, so that the gears and bearings act as a bearing for the mixer shaft on the drive end. This design reduces stress on the shafts and contributes to longer life. On the opposite end, block bearings mounted outboard of the mixer trough prevent lubricants from contaminating mixed product and allow space for packing gland-type shaft seals. Coupling design accommodates slight shaft bend or misalignments, and enables the gearbox to be removed without disturbing shaft seals.
Trough contour minimizes product residue and eliminates the “Dead Zone” in the bottom of the mixer. Special finishes are available. Materials of construction include 304 or 316 stainless, for corrosion resistance.
